Mold and Mildew Growth

By Patrick Coleman from panama city,fl on September 28, 2005
Category: Causes of mildew

How much time is required for mildew and mold to develop, in significantl amounts, while in a sealed wooden container (crate).

I am in the moving and storage business. I am contesting a claim for mildew and mold damage while a household goods shipment was in our custody. The shipment originated in Germany, was stored for three years in a Baltimore warehouse, then shipped to Florida for delivery. It remained in sealed shipping containers from pickup in Germany to final delivery. It was in our custody for only 72 hours.

Our position is that moisture was present inside the crate, either from exposure to rain in Germany, or from being rained on somewhere in transit. We believe the mildew was caused somewhere prior to our custody. Our basis is that 72 hours is not enough time for mold and mildew to develop
