low profile toilet flapper problem

I've been asked to repair a flapper in an older one-piece AMERICAN STANDARD low profile toilet for a friend. She's paid two different plumbers for the repair work and the result was a suggestion to her to replace it. I think it's un-necessary to replace it. It's a classic old super clean toilet that leaks through the flapper seal. The design of this flapper assembly is poor in my view because the flapper sealing surface is a shallow convex configuration of rather hard rubber. It seems to need more downward pressure to seal properly. In this assembly there is a vertical tube attached which makes it seem that if there was some weight in it to force it down it would seal better. Could it be that that is what the tube is for? The rim to which the flapper surface seals seems to also be in good shape...no pitting in the brass, etc. Leaking is almost un-noticeable but constant and costly! What would you advise? Thank-you |
