cleaning antique chairs

I have a set of Edwardian antique dining chairs, nothing very special, but I am fond of them. I noticed the other day when I wiped a smear of paint off with a damp cloth (yes, we're decorating) that the cloth came away very grimey and that the wood underneath seemed more golden than elsewhere. I think they are oak, and I rather preferred that golden shade to the dark reddish one currently. Can I clean the whole chair with a damp cloth or will that do more harm than good? Should I use detergent or not? Was that dirt or just the build up of wax over the years? What should I polish with after?
