electrical outlets

Yesterday, we noticed that in several rooms of our house, the receptacles developed a problem. They are standard two outlet receptacles and now only the bottom outlet works. We have noticed the problem in two of the bedrooms and the family room. I have not tested the remaining rooms to see if its a common theme. I am not an electrical person and am therefore, clueless.
