 Ants Information

Ants can be distinguished from other similar insects, such as bees and wasps, by the presence of a constricted area between the thorax and abdomen (pedicle). The pedicle of our most common varieties will bear one or more raised areas (hump or humps) called a pediole(s).

There are several species of ants that may be found in a building environment in Michigan. Carpenter and pharoah ants are the most likely to take up residence. Others commonly found moving into and out of a dwelling during warm weather include the pavement ant, acrobat ant, and odorous house ant.

Before a control procedure is implemented it is important to determine what species is invading your dwelling. Contact your local Cooperative Extension Service Specialist to aid with identification and suggested control options.

For a complete listing of suggested control options for all home, yard and garden insect pests contact your local Extension Service, found under local government in the phone book.

Read and follow instructions on the pesticide label. Heed all warnings. Check with your physician if you have any concerns regarding your personal health risk. Revised by Tom Ellis, M.S., Department of Entomology
