Differences of more than 50 watts will make a difference in operating costs. Efficiency differences will not make a great difference in costs, but if the appliance is to be used most of summer, as in some homes, costs will add up. A 500-watt unit will use 1 kwh every two hours it is running.
Some models let the fan run continuously to circulate air back to the humidistat. Since in most situations the moisture content will be the same throughout the enclosed area being treated, this may be an unnecessary energy expense.
