Synthetic enamel is an organic material applied to metal and dried on by mild heat. It is usually found on major appliances as a cheaper substitute for porcelain enamel on surfaces that won't be damaged by alkali or acid. Abrasive cleaners and metal scouring pads will scratch and wear the surface.
