Home Automation: The Wave of the Future

Making your time at home more enjoyable

When “The Jetsons” premiered on television in the early 1960s, with their high-tech, robotic gadgets, nobody really thought that these things would someday be a reality. It was so far out there that the show was cancelled after only one season. However, it was alive in reruns and eventually made a comeback in the mid-80s. Even then, the high-tech gadgets that the Jetsons used on a daily basis were beyond even the wildest fantasies of anyone in those times. Well that has all changed. What the creators had assumed was still lightyears away can now be found in almost every home.

After the events of 9/11, people began staying at home more. Family time has suddenly taken more importance over going out. With this new trend, came the desire for more advanced equipment in the home. If you’re going to spend the majority of your time inside, you may as well make yourself as comfortable as possible, right?

As much as we have advanced, we still have not quite reached the level of the Jetsons. We cannot clean off the table after supper in one click or tell our robot to make us a sandwich. Not yet anyways. But technology certainly has come a long way. With newer video equipment, we can see who is on the phone or at our door without ever getting up from the couch. We also can turn the lights on and off with the click of a button and play various songs through a centralized music player in every room of the house with the touch of a screen.

People are increasingly interested in purchasing fully automated homes. These are homes that maximize the quality of your life by using an integrated network of wired (or wireless) gadgets that are focused on the care, comfort, and safety of you and your home. Some of the most popular features are audio, visual, security, lighting, and central vacuums.

While more and more people are interested in purchasing this type of equipment (most popularly home offices and home theaters) it is easier to install in new homes while they are being constructed. This is because there is easier access into the inner parts of the house where most of the wires are to be installed. This cuts down on a lot of remodeling and unnecessary construction to your home. Also, being installed in new homes is optimal since the equipment can be installed properly, where it is supposed to go for maximum effectiveness, rather than around obstacles that are pre-existing in the home.

Home automation not only makes your life easier, but it also saves you money. Of course there is an upfront cost to install all the equipment, but after that, you will save on some of your bills. During the summer, you can turn the AC down during the day while you’re at work. Right before you leave from work, you can call from your cell phone or log onto the internet to turn on the AC so your home will be nice and cool when you arrive. This conserves energy and it also saves you money on your electric bill.

With an audio system, you can have speakers put throughout your home so you can listen to your favorite songs no matter where you are. You can also set it up to have multiple playlists so each member of the family can listen to his or her own favorite bands. You can also have playlists set up for entertaining guests.

Security is one the most important features you can get, although probably not as fun to think about as the others. There are security systems that automatically notify the police if someone tries to break in. You can set up cameras outside so that you can see people coming before opening the door to let them in. You can also view your home from anywhere on the internet to make sure everything is safe and sound.

Just when you think that there is everything you could possibly ever need or want a home to do, there is more. Experts are currently developing appliances that will turn on remotely. With this feature you will be able to turn on the oven by remote while you’re still at work so that dinner will be ready for you when you get home. Or you can start running the water for that bath you’ve been waiting for all day. If you can dream of a way to make your life easier and more enjoyable at home, it is probably already being developed.
